BaseN Performance Monitoring helps Deutsche Telekom`s Central European unit to ensure outstanding service quality, high customer satisfaction and fast embracement of new services such as Virtual Hosting Environment

Deutsche Telekom`s Central European operations, with the acquired GTS Central Europe, rely on BaseN`s Performance Monitoring for its Virtual Hosting Service, IP VPN and Ethernet lines. The BaseN Platform is integrated with the GTS automated provisioning and billing system as well as the CRM applications.

BaseN built for GTS a scalable and resilient platform serving 5 European countries providing GTS a unique unified foundation for Performance Monitoring of existing and newly developed data services, proactive monitoring for customer outages in customer care and company internal status monitoring of non-telco devices.

The Performance Monitoring service enables all GTS customers to review performance parameters of their services including its most up-to-date online status. This can also become the source of proactive service management internally in GTS`s NOC (Network Operating Center), or a performance tracking based on the contract level when various alarm messages or warnings can be received by the customer. For the wholesale environment, depending on the service type, data are used as a base for claiming SLA (Service Level Agreement) credits or for price service calculations.

The access is available via a secure End User Portal for end users and an Administrative Portal for NOC, both working securely on the same precise and fresh data flow. Both portals are an online web service available through an internet browser.

BaseN Platform also offered a single and united platform for several technologies coming from company growth and acquisitions. The same way it allowed to unite diverse technologies of new services by multiple vendors.

BaseN also proved to be a key asset in making the GTS Virtual Hosting exactly the high-level service they wanted to offer to their end customers.

In the last service implementation of the VMWare-based Virtual Hosting product it provides all customers online statistics of VMWare cloud resources usage plus other GTS own service elements such as GTS Hosting Center Network Interfaces. Also here in the Virtual Hosting product, BaseN allowed for quick adjusting to heterogeneous reading while giving GTS customers flexible and unified outputs. All that without compromising reliability or scalability.

High level of auto-discovery

BaseN's system is minimizing support efforts and manual configuration tasks by a high level of auto-discovery developed by GTS's own engineers. This helps GTS to reduce the input to only providing the customer IDs and basic service definition to BaseN.

Based on GTS's CRM data feeds, BaseN is automatically building the inventory from technology changes regularly to discover all necessary technical parameters for implemented service monitoring that does not need to be entered into GTS CRM system. This helps save time and prevents from possible inconsistencies and monitoring failures in times of fast infrastructure changes and the company's continuous growth and innovation - a permanent trend that current successful telecommunication industry players are continuously dealing with.

Summary

The BaseN solution was selected in several consecutive steps and rounds of tenders from a group of top available solutions in the market. It was chosen because it is price effective, scalable, reliable and flexible. It also became easily integrated into the existing Netcool environment for core network resources umbrella management.

After using the BaseN Platform already several years for performance monitoring of IP VPN (Cisco, Juniper, Ciena, OneAccess and more) and Ethernet lines (Ciena, Alcatel Lucent and more), GTS expanded to use it also for its Virtual Hosting Environment (VHE on VMware).

GTS, thanks to BaseN, offers today accurate and timely performance feedback to GTS customers which helps them to build solid customer trust. GTS end customers who use several GTS services also profit from using the same portal provided by BaseN for all their monitoring needs.

Systems Engineer

BaseN is a global Internet of Things (IoT) operator, enabling the transformation from physical products to intelligent services in any industry.

We are strengthening our Operations Team by looking for a qualified Systems Engineer to be based in Helsinki, Finland.

The Systems Engineer reports to the Operations Manager and will provide advanced technical support to our customers. You will work in close co-operation with BaseN Corporate Sales and Technology teams.

Duties and responsibilities

Provide first line support for all customers such as ticket handling and troubleshooting

Handle server installations and system maintenance, portal configurations/setup, customer coordination and project management

Assist customers with template modifications and visualizations

Occasionally provide customer training and technical sales support

Assist in development and configuration of new measurement templates

The position requires being available for on-call duties.

Requirements

Experience with Linux system administration

JavaScript, Perl, Java programming and SNMP based Network Monitoring/Management

A minimum 2 years of work experience

Ability to communicate technical solutions

B.Sc/M.Sc. in relevant field or equivalent experience

Fluency in English and Finnish, both written and verbal, other languages considered an advantage

Team player - ability to work within teams in an international and multicultural environment

Willingness to travel

Finnish national or naturalized citizen

Ability to pass a background security check ("suppea turvallisuusselvitys")

    Since establishing BaseN Corporation in 2001, Pasi Hurri has been holding the position of Chief Executive Officer. He is also the largest shareholder of the company. Mr. Hurri is also a visiting lecturer and expert speaker, e.g. at IEEE and several universities.

    Prior to founding BaseN, Mr. Hurri spent more than a decade in senior technology management positions. He presided the engineering effort of the KPNQwest Eurorings network, then the largest pan-European carrier transporting more than 50% of the Internet traffic. Mr. Hurri also was the Chairman of FICIX, the Finnish Commercial Internet Exchange, and a Member of the Board of Directors at Academica Oy, now part of TelecityGroup. Within Ahlstrom Corporation Mr. Hurri managed the creation of a global IP network in the early 90`s.

    With his strategic thinking inherited from the Finnish Air Force, Mr. Hurri has always emphasized the importance of deep situational awareness, according to Clausewitz principles.

    Erik Bunn, Chief Technology Officer

    Erik Bunn is one of the founders of BaseN and has planned, designed, and implemented the distributed computing core system. He began his career at Nokia in the position of ICT systems engineer after graduating from Helsinki University of Technology with a MSc in Applied Physics. He has also worked as a researcher at Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) and as a Software Developer at Java development company Regex before joining BaseN.

    Kaj J. Niemi, Chief Engineer, Senior Vice President Engineering

    Mr. Niemi is a co-founder of BaseN. As the Chief Engineer at BaseN, he has 18+ years experience in working with IP, Internet, Service Provider and enterprise networks. Mr. Niemi has a far reaching ability to conceptualize, design, create and operate an increasingly distributed, global server and network architecture. He holds a MBA from Hanken School of Economics.

    Corina Maiwald, Chief Marketing Officer and Secretary to the Management Team

    Ms. Corina Maiwald joined BaseN in 2010. Prior to that, Corina held marketing and business development positions in Finland, the US and Australia. She has a special interest in service design and its role in the emerging Internet of Things. She applies design thinking and emphasises customer-centricity in her work. Before BaseN, Corina's last position was with Ernst & Young, supporting the company's German Business Network.

    Anders Viden, Vice President, Product Management

    Anders Viden, VP of Product Management at BaseN, has far-reaching expertise in IoT/IoE and cloud-based M2M offerings, including such areas as Smart Energy, eHealth, Smart Building, Connected Car, Smart City, and industrial Internet management solutions. He joined BaseN after more than 10 years at Cisco Systems as Director of Product Management with extensive experience in network management systems, OSS/BSS, and emerging Smart Grid solutions. Anders Viden has contributed significantly with leadership and solutions incubation to TM Forum`s Internet of Things and Open Digital standards and best practices programs. He holds a BSc and MSSc in Economics, Business Administration, Political Science, and a Master of European Affairs, all from Lund University, Sweden.

    Carlos Canto, Chief Sales Officer

    Mr. Carlos Canto, Chief Sales Officer, joined BaseN in 2017. Prior to joining BaseN, Mr. Canto held several key positions at Eltel, his latest being Development Director of Transmission International TE AB. With his international work experience of 20+ years he is specialized in global process development and cross border collaboration. Mr. Canto holds a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management.

    Xiaohui Zhu, Chief Financial Officer

    Ms Zhu joined BaseN in 2015. Prior to that she held various senior finance and operational positions at large multinational corporations such as IBM, ABB and Deloitte. Ms Zhu holds a Bachelor Degree in Accounting and Finance from Shanghai International Studies University and is currently finishing her Master Degree in Accounting from Aalto University. With over a decade of experience she brings strategic leadership and financial acumen to BaseN's Corporate Management Team.
