BaseN Performance Monitoring helps Deutsche Telekom`s Central European unit to ensure outstanding service quality, high customer satisfaction and fast embracement of new services such as Virtual Hosting Environment

Deutsche Telekom`s Central European operations, with the acquired GTS Central Europe, rely on BaseN`s Performance Monitoring for its Virtual Hosting Service, IP VPN and Ethernet lines. The BaseN Platform is integrated with the GTS automated provisioning and billing system as well as the CRM applications.

BaseN built for GTS a scalable and resilient platform serving 5 European countries providing GTS a unique unified foundation for Performance Monitoring of existing and newly developed data services, proactive monitoring for customer outages in customer care and company internal status monitoring of non-telco devices.

The Performance Monitoring service enables all GTS customers to review performance parameters of their services including its most up-to-date online status. This can also become the source of proactive service management internally in GTS`s NOC (Network Operating Center), or a performance tracking based on the contract level when various alarm messages or warnings can be received by the customer. For the wholesale environment, depending on the service type, data are used as a base for claiming SLA (Service Level Agreement) credits or for price service calculations.

The access is available via a secure End User Portal for end users and an Administrative Portal for NOC, both working securely on the same precise and fresh data flow. Both portals are an online web service available through an internet browser.

BaseN Platform also offered a single and united platform for several technologies coming from company growth and acquisitions. The same way it allowed to unite diverse technologies of new services by multiple vendors.

BaseN also proved to be a key asset in making the GTS Virtual Hosting exactly the high-level service they wanted to offer to their end customers.

In the last service implementation of the VMWare-based Virtual Hosting product it provides all customers online statistics of VMWare cloud resources usage plus other GTS own service elements such as GTS Hosting Center Network Interfaces. Also here in the Virtual Hosting product, BaseN allowed for quick adjusting to heterogeneous reading while giving GTS customers flexible and unified outputs. All that without compromising reliability or scalability.

High level of auto-discovery

BaseN's system is minimizing support efforts and manual configuration tasks by a high level of auto-discovery developed by GTS's own engineers. This helps GTS to reduce the input to only providing the customer IDs and basic service definition to BaseN.

Based on GTS's CRM data feeds, BaseN is automatically building the inventory from technology changes regularly to discover all necessary technical parameters for implemented service monitoring that does not need to be entered into GTS CRM system. This helps save time and prevents from possible inconsistencies and monitoring failures in times of fast infrastructure changes and the company's continuous growth and innovation - a permanent trend that current successful telecommunication industry players are continuously dealing with.

Summary

The BaseN solution was selected in several consecutive steps and rounds of tenders from a group of top available solutions in the market. It was chosen because it is price effective, scalable, reliable and flexible. It also became easily integrated into the existing Netcool environment for core network resources umbrella management.

After using the BaseN Platform already several years for performance monitoring of IP VPN (Cisco, Juniper, Ciena, OneAccess and more) and Ethernet lines (Ciena, Alcatel Lucent and more), GTS expanded to use it also for its Virtual Hosting Environment (VHE on VMware).

GTS, thanks to BaseN, offers today accurate and timely performance feedback to GTS customers which helps them to build solid customer trust. GTS end customers who use several GTS services also profit from using the same portal provided by BaseN for all their monitoring needs.

Create mass-customized products with BaseN

BaseN spime architecture enables a whole new improved and lasting relationship between the product manufacturer and the customer. Spime means that the physical part, the actual product, becomes secondary and the real thing is its virtual representation. It comes into existence before anything is manufactured. It starts collecting information right away, for example of all the different components that are needed to create the physical product.

Once the object is manufactured, spime continues recording its entire lifecycle. By that, manufacturers learn not only more about their product after it left the production line but also about the product users. That in turn allows them to keep improving their products and to develop new services for their customers. The customer relationship will become eternal, so to speak.

BaseN Platform: Bridging the divide between healthcare and telecommunications

    CARE AT HOME

BaseN Platform in the eHealth value chain enables remote monitoring of patient health measures, such as blood pressure, heart rate, glucose levels, body temperature, weight, as well as sleep and activity data coming from wearable technology devices. Real time and historical trend data reporting allows to correlate activity and medication to the development of the condition.

    WORKFORCE MANAGEMENT

Threshold-based alerts being provided to multiple eHealth stakeholders, such as doctors, nurses, insurance companies, emergency care teams, etc., enables secure monitoring of patients at their homes with fast dispatching of help, sending a nurse or ambulance, in case of worrisome alerts.

    PRESCRIPTION MANAGEMENT

Doctors have more accurate and up to date patient health data at hand, which allows for adjusting the dosage of medication more precisely.

    DIGITAL HEALTH SERVICES

Patients store all their measurement data in their personal health cloud and can share their personal health portal (or restricted views of it) with doctors, nurses, insurance companies, family members, etc.

WHY WE'RE IDEALLY SUITED FOR EHEALTH SOLUTIONS

Unprecedented scalability: Processing data from millions or even 10s of millions of devices and objects in real-time, something our fully distributed architecture handles with ease.

Fault tolerance, security, and no down-times: Because of our fully resilient and secure architecture we can guarantie that data is never lost, missed, or miss-used.

An extensible platform: Starting off in network fault and performance managment, we quickly added monitoring of meters, sensors, RFIDs, and we keep adding support for new devices and objects weekly.

BaseN measurement technology in the Carbon Neutral Municipalities (HINKU) Project

BaseN is providing a system for real time energy monitoring within the HINKU (Carbon neutral municipalities) project in Uusikaupunki, a municipality in Western Finland. The HINKU project, which began in 2009 and is carried out by altogether five Finnish municipalities, aims at effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The overall objective of the participating municipalities is to cut greenhouse gases faster and by a higher percentage than required by the European Union. Within the group of participating municipalities Uusikaupunki pursues the most ambitious goal to cut the emissions by 80 percent from 2007 by the end of 2030.

In order to achieve this objective, measuring and monitoring both emissions and power consumption is an important key element of the project.

The HINKU project is funded by the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes), enterprises and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

The main challenge is to handle the collected amount of data and display it in a logical way for the involved parties that are either businesses or residents and, by that, to achieve true savings in order to reach the goals of the entire project.

The following are the different points of measurement from where data has to be collected and reported at a total of four different sites within Uusikaupunki.

    1. Electricity metering

    2. Hot and cold water metering

    3. District heating measurement

50 000 Euros in Energy Saving for Uusikaupinki-based Fish Processing Company Kalaset

One positive example in Uusikaupunki is the fish processing company Kalaset, where energy savings are significant. Kalaset has saved one person's salary of about 50 000 euros with other related expenses per one year. With the help of BaseN real time monitoring Kalaset has been able to optimize their operations and introduce new better practices in the production halls. BaseN measures the total electricity consumption and the electricity consumption of three individual freezers (Freezing tunnels 2 x (-24 C) and cold storage).

There are currently three other sides from where BaseN is collecting measurements: Merilintu business premises, As. Oy Santtionranta residential row house complex and the local fire department.

From the Merilintu business premises the whole electricity is measured with two installations, one in the post office and another one in the cafeteria?s kitchen. Additionally, data is collected from the heating meter of the whole Merilintu building.

At As. Oy Santtionranta electricity consumption is measured in five normal households. In addition, BaseN measures hot and cold water from Vesiverto meters. BaseN gets this data directly from Vesiverto by interfacing with their own reading system. Vesiverto sends an email with the data once per day and BaseN reads it via a webpage. In the near future, this will be changed to be normally read via an agent.

From the local fire department total electricity consumption and heating power are monitored, each from the existing meter that was already in the building.

BaseN Platform: Bringing Smart Energy to the Utilities

BaseN Service enables managing energy efficiency of a variety of applications and services. BaseN Platform gathers measurement data from smart meters, renewable energy sources, inverters, transformers, and any other energy device that collects or sends data, and displays the collected data in an easily understandable, concise and relevant way - real-time and historical, enabling customers to access measurements down to specific devices.

    ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE

BaseN Platform enables energy management of such infrastructure elements, as electrical power networks, solar and wind power generators, EV charging stations or any other components of the utilities? energy infrastructure.

    ICT and IP NETWORKS

BaseN provides an advanced supervisory system for energy efficiency management of telecom and enterprise IP networks, ICT environments and all associated network equipment and server infrastructure end-to-end.

WHY WE'RE IDEALLY SUITED FOR THE SMART ENERGY SOLUTIONS

Unprecedented scalability: Processing data from millions or even 10s of millions of devices and objects in real-time, something our fully distributed architecture handles with ease.

Fault tolerance, security, and no down-times: Because of our fully resilient and secure architecture we can guarantee that data is never lost, missed, or miss-used.

Experience in the field: Energy efficiency management is such an area where we are already able to provide several key customer references upon request. By now a four-time catalyst award winner, BaseN also serves as a lead for Smart Energy and energy efficiency in TM Forum.

VolkerWessels: BaseN Solution for Monitoring Zero Energy Bill Houses: Providing Proof to Tenants that the Houses Built By VolkerWessels Are Not Using Any Energy

VolkerWessels, the second largest construction company of the Netherlands, has decided to change its housing production in the coming years to 100% zero energy bill houses. Contractually they want to guarantee and prove to the tenants and buyers that these houses indeed do not use any energy.

Volker Wessels will built these houses throughout the Netherlands and possibly also in Germany. The volume will be approximately 1,000 houses per year and when the market allows, up to 3,000 per year.

    Description of the Houses

The design of the houses is, looking from the outside, typical Dutch. Meaning row houses, or semi-detached houses, with front and back yards, 5 rooms, and 134m2 living space. The Dutch climate has mild winters, usually with temperatures going down to around 0?C, with lowest temperatures at -10?C. The summers are mildly warm, averaging between 20-25?C. A couple of weeks every summer the temperatures may go a bit above 30?C.

The houses are built in a factory and transported to the building site in components. From a technical perspective, this allows complete control of the full building process and a very short construction time on site of 5 weeks.

Looking at the energy concept of these houses all measures that can be taken have been taken. At an extra cost of approximately 10.000? these houses have:

    - a very thick outer shell with 35 cm insulation, fully airtight

    - triple glazing

    - an air-to-water heat pump

    - balanced ventilation to recuperate the energy of the exhaust air

    - a roof fully mounted with PV cells

    - a smart meter

    Monitoring Needs

VolkerWessels sells these houses with a warranty. This warranty is formulated such that the houses, as a system, do not use any energy over the year. A certain amount of energy is reserved for the daily appliances families use, like washing, drying, TV, cooking etc. The latter is especially known to vary a lot from family to family, literature reports differences of a factor of 4 between families with equal composition.

In the buyers/tenant contract, VolkerWessels will formulate user boundaries for the use of the houses. If you go beyond these, the warranty will cease to exist. For example, in The Netherlands, temperature settings of 20?C in the living room are considered normal. As an inhabitant, if you would go beyond 23?C on your thermostat, you would violate the contract.

From a technical perspective, heat pumps and balanced ventilation units need proper settings and maintenance. Optimal settings may even slightly change over time, equipment may break down and other unexpected events may occur. All of these jeopardize the performance of the houses and need immediate action.

This calls for monitoring of all the produced houses and to have insight which houses perform as expected form an energy perspective, and which inhabitants use the houses out of the contract barriers. A helpdesk is in place for that task.

From a consumer perspective, showing the actual performance and energy consumption of the houses will help to give transparency to the inhabitants.

    BaseN's Role

In domestic applications like this VolkerWessels case, a small controller was installed in each house. Each installation component is connected to the controller, mostly wired. The interface protocols vary. Since no changes have been made to the installation components, the communication is done using the interface options that the equipment provides. From the installation components all logging is gathered: settings, internal variables, alarms etc.

An additional set of energy meters are added to gather information on the energy usage of washing, drying and cooking - on top of the usage of the installation components and the overall consumption given by the smart meter.

Through this the controller gathers around 200 parameters each minute for each house. Over the years, the volume of data gathered will increase therefore to around a million data elements per minute for all the houses that VolkerWessels will then have produced and that will be under monitoring.

The controller communicates with the BaseN Platform over the broadband connection of the house. When data is received in the platform, any visualising, calculation, alarm and other process can be configured in the platform. No data is ever lost, all data is stored from day 1 onwards ? recording the entire lifecycle of the house. Any calculation or analysis can be done backwards in time, allowing for scenario analysis. Also forecasts can be created.

The availability to all the gathered information in different portal views is highly important, since the risk involved here can be directly translated to financial risk on the balance sheet of VolkerWessels. To facilitate this, maps are generated showing the statuses of all houses, giving an overview of all monitored houses in a quick glance and allowing to detail down to the basic issues behind quickly. All of these generated views and helpdesk portals can be modified by VolkerWessels themselves.

    Any source. Any scale. Real-time.

Saving More with Less: Vantaan Energia and BaseN bring effortless energy awareness and real savings to the smart apartment

With construction and energy companies striving to offer increasingly sustainable, smart and safe living options to residents, BaseN paves the way for them to roll out sophisticated energy management systems cost - efficiently. NCC, one of the leading construction companies in Northern Europe, completed the two Spinelli apartments in late spring 2015 in Vantaa, Finland. The integration of BaseN`s groundbreaking analytics with the energy price forecasting service provided by Vantaan Energia enables the buildings` residents to easily achieve savings.

    Spinelli user interface

How the BaseN Solution works for Spinelli

BaseN Platform measures the electricity as well as cold and hot water consumption of each of the 58 Spinelli apartments in real time. The electricity and water usage is additionally translated to the actual cost in Euros, a more understandable measure for households. The tenants have at a glance insight to the hourly changing electricity price, enabling them to plan ahead for their energy usage, e.g. to run the washing machine or dish washer during the most economical hours. A new energy efficiency feature is the demographic comparison between households. The user interface allows households to see how their electricity and water consumption relates to other households with the same amount of family members. Via home/away control the families can request the system to send an alarm if electricity or water consumption is higher than expected when no one is at home. This can help detecting water leaks or faulty electric appliances before serious harm is caused.

    Spinelli hourly pricing alerts

Finding low - cost hours of electricity and avoid costly lessons with the price per hour assistance

In addition to relating one`s own water and electricity consumption with similar households, Spinelli tenants can compare their own consumptions of a selected current period of time, e.g. current month, with previous periods, e.g. previous month, in order to realise higher saving potentials. Vantaan Energia also provides the residents with real time information on the energy price at a specific point in time, as well as with a pricing forecast for the following day, allowing the users to optimize their energy usage.

This service feature is implemented in cooperation with e.g. energy companies. The pricing forecast for the next day is sent by email to the user and displays the hourly price for the next day. This way, tenants can plan electricity consuming activities like running the dishwasher or washing machine during the more cost efficient times of the day

    Saving Facts

Real time water measurements result in approximately 30% lower use than the average*. Studies have also shown that monitoring the use of electricity in real time can result in an average saving of 10%**. BaseN`s service enables potential water and electricity savings as the real time consumption information is easily accessible and trackable by the smart building residents.

Interconnected Health - The IoT, Smart Buildings and People

Through spimes in the Internet of Things, smart homes are empowered to ensure the wellbeing of their residents. We now live in a world of smart homes and connected objects. However, true value comes from even smarter means. Whereas the Internet of Things (IoT) is at large about simply connecting everything, more can and should be done when it comes to analysis and control.

The environment and other conditions in and around any building change over time. That is why it is essential to record the entire lifecycle of a building and the people (and things) living in it. On top of all that stored data, smart algorithms make automatically aware of any changes and create predictions for the future. All that creates a virtual smart counterpart of the entire building. This counterpart is known as spime.

Everything is connected: The next level of Smart Buildings

Through sensor-equipped building components, e.g. heat pumps and ventilation units, lifetime data is gathered from the very beginning and correlated with other conditions inside and outside the building. Access to this data is provided to tenants and facility management. The building`s energy and water consumption and environmental conditions (CO2 concentration, indoor temperature, humidity level) are also managed through the building`s spime.

The spime, for example, automatically adjusts ventilation if the level of CO2 concentration in the house is detected to be too high. The tenants are also able to access all the information on the air quality through their customer portals. In addition, production measurements of the rooftop PV cells are fed to the spime, providing useful performance data to the facility management as well.

The fact that the spimes record the full lifetime history of the houses allows tracking changes in energy consumption and environmental patterns over time. This enables optimisation of various settings, ensures preventive maintenance in case of suboptimal performance of equipment, and gives full transparency to both the tenants and the service company.

    Fully spime`d houses

Existing energy and water consumption management systems can be complimented by additional features, thus providing more security to prevent water leakages in the apartments for instance. This can be done by introducing a home away feature, which notifies the tenant when water is consumed at home, while he or she is away.

During construction works quality of building materials might be influenced by various factors: the woods can be partially wet after heavy rains at the construction site and the concrete can be utilised by the workers when it is not at the appropriate level of dryness. However, due to scheduling issues, constructors are often pressured to use the materials when those are not in a perfect state. Spiming building materials already during the construction phase will help solving this challenge. Additionally, sensors kept in the concrete also after the house construction has been finalised, allow for constantly analysing the moisture levels of the houses` walls, thereby ensuring that the house breathes the way it should.

The most important aspect, though, is the effect on the quality of life of the building`s inhabitants. Their home`s spime will always ensure that they live in perfect living conditions automatically adjusting, eg temperature and lighting, and will allow for immediate preventive action, such as in the case of deterioration of air quality. The home becomes an active enabler of a person`s health, wellbeing and happiness.

Connected cars: The Internet of Things for the Automotive Industry

The connected (spime) car business model BaseN advocates means that each and every component in the car is managed digitally and remotely once the car is manufactured. This will have profound effects to Research and Development, but most importantly it totally changes the business relationship between the manufacturer and customer, by transforming the car into an ever-improving service continuum.

Together with our partner Infocar we developed a vehicle monitoring solution, which collects data from the vehicle about the car's current position and condition, e.g. measures like speed acceleration. Customers are car manufacturers, leasing companies, insurance companies and other fleet management related organizations.

Spimes on the Industrial Internet (of Things)

BaseN was established to provide extremely scalable and fault-tolerant network and service management systems for telecommunications operators and large multinational enterprises, and is positioning itself as the primary platform for Spimes in the Industrial Internet and Internet of Things (IoT).

At the core of the BaseN design philosophy is the concept of Spime, a logical incarnation of any thing. Spimes record and manage the full lifecycle of their physical representations as physical hardware and support software come and go. As such an object can be considered a Spime when all of its essential programming is managed in the cloud. The Spime concept was originally crafted by the author Bruce Sterling as a neologism for a futuristic Internet of Things object.

BaseN is ideally suited for IoT Operations:

Unprecedented scalability: IoT often requires systems to process data from millions or even 10s of millions of devices and objects in real-time, something our fully distributed architecture handles with ease.

Fully owned Intellectual Property Rights (IPR): BaseN platform does not use any third party commercial licenses. This enables unprecedented commercial scalability for billions of things.

Fault tolerance, security, and no down-times: IoT communications are often mission-critical and because of our fully resilient and secure architecture we can warrant that data is never lost, missed, or misused.

An extensible platform with extensive support for IoT already: Starting off in network fault and performance management, we quickly added monitoring of meters, sensors, RFIDs, and we keep adding support for new devices and objects weekly.

Deep real-time analysis that let you focus on what matters: A 5 million alarm-storm is not useful information unless you are also notified about the root cause(s), and with fully customizable thresholds we are able to let you combine any relevant data types into alarms and events in any combination.

Removes the headache, complexity, and risk with IoT: Our SaaS offering removes the need for large upfront investments in hardware, software licenses, and administration, and we have multiple deployment options: as a public cloud or as a fully private cloud secured inside your data center and network.
